Haiti Earthquake

OBJECTIF

The Context

The earth shook once more in Haiti!

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 14. The epicenter was about 130 kilometers west of the capital, Port-au-Prince, near the town of Petit Trou de Nippes. The towns of Les Cayes and Jeremie were particularly affected, with numerous people still missing.

UNICEF estimates that 1.2 million people, including 540,000 children, were impacted by the earthquake. Recent figures indicate over 2,500 fatalities (a number expected to rise), more than 12,200 injured, and 332 missing. Thousands of homes and buildings have been destroyed. Hospitals are overwhelmed by the emergency due to a shortage of medicines and staff. Aid distribution has been slow and insufficient, and many areas have yet to receive assistance because debris is blocking access.

The region lacks water and electricity. To make matters worse, tropical storm Grace has swept over the island, causing further flooding and casualties in areas already devastated by the quake.

The Project

Our local staff quickly mobilized to provide relief and assistance to Haitian families affected by the earthquake. Immediate action is essential to provide aid and basic necessities to the thousands of displaced people, which is why we have launched a fundraising campaign.

How you can help:

  • €25: Essential goods (food and drinking water)
  • €50: Medicines and first aid supplies
  • €100: Temporary shelter for displaced families

Funds will be sent to trusted Haitian associations, ANPIL’s long-standing partners, who will personally distribute the supplies to the population.
