The Context
Water distribution is inadequate due to the lack of a water supply network, irregular and inconsistent delivery, poor water quality, and a lack of oversight.
UPDATE – November 2015
The “Water Project” has officially concluded! As you can see in the photo gallery, the two drinking water distribution points, equipped with a total of 32 taps, are now fully operational.
The children and their families can finally access clean drinking water.
We have also included the purchase of two 2,500-liter tanks in the project. This way, the
water supply will always be guaranteed.
Thank you to all our supporters for turning this “dream” into reality, and thanks to E.ON
S.p.A. for promoting our project in its points collection campaign: many customers chose to help us!
UPDATE – June 2015
At the Bena Djani orphanage, where the “Water Project” was supposed to be implemented,
a series of vandalistic acts recently occurred at the hands of an unidentified armed Congolese group.
In June, we personally visited Mwene Ditu and were able to assess the situation.
In fact, these individuals stole everything useful they could find, destroying the remaining items.
The damages are significant, and the company responsible for the work informed us that, at present, there are no conditions to implement the planned water system without first renovating the damaged premises.
Moreover, since we have not been able to identify the perpetrators of the vandalism, we cannot be sure that such incidents will not recur during or after the execution of the work, thus rendering our intervention entirely ineffective.
For this reason, we have decided to suspend the project in Mwene Ditu until the situation allows for safe operations and guarantees of minimal stability.
As we collaborate with other missions in Congo that require similar interventions and projects to those in Mwene Ditu, we have decided to implement the “Water Project” at the St.
Georges mission, on the outskirts of Kinshasa: the type and objectives of the original project remain the same, but we can rely on a safer and more controlled structure.
