Weaving the future

OBJECTIF

The project aims to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030
Agenda.

Specifically:
● promote female empowerment;
● ensure decent work that respects human rights;
● protect collective ownership rights of huipiles fabrics;
● promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth;
● combat child malnutrition;
● foster economic self-sufficiency.

The Context

Guatemala has the highest rate of child malnutrition in Latin America. The percentage of chronic child malnutrition reaches up to 80% in some of the most deprived areas, such as the rural regions of the Chimaltenango department.
Since 2012, we have been operating in the municipality of Tecpán through the “AC’UALA” Program, which includes the implementation of Food Integration Projects and micro-projects for economic independence.

The Project

This project will enable 10 women, mothers of children affected by chronic malnutrition, to develop new skills and learn a useful trade.
The embroidery and handmade items they produce will be sold at local markets, increasing the family’s overall income.

Each participant will receive:
● a loom,
● threads suitable for weaving and embroidery,
● home-based training on weaving techniques,
● support for product marketing.

Based on the outcomes achieved, we will consider developing a model to facilitate local commercialization of these textile products. For instance, this could involve selling through our local partners at larger, well-known markets like those in Quetzaltenango or Chichicastenango.
